Norman’s Gap Framework
Full Gap Diagnostic
The deep precision instrument. Slider-based scoring across external pressure, system regulation, and leader regulation. Produces four outputs: Gap Score, Gap Index, Gap Severity, and Effectiveness %.
What this tool measures

Norman's Gap is the structural distance between external pressure and internal regulation. This tool measures that gap with precision — using a tier-weighted severity score for pressure and a composite of system and leader regulation for response capacity.

The result is four numbers that together tell you not just whether a gap exists, but how wide it is, how fast it may be growing, and where the regulation breakdown is occurring.

The five Gap Index bands
Stable (below 1.0)Regulation exceeds pressure. Reserve capacity exists.
Managed tension (1.0–1.15)Pressure and regulation close. Monitor the trend.
Widening gap (1.16–1.30)Pressure outpacing regulation. Intervention warranted now.
Instability forming (1.31–1.50)Gap is material. Visible to anyone looking. Act now.
System risk (above 1.50)Regulation overwhelmed. Outcomes degrading. Stabilize first.

What this tool scores
1
External pressure — Tier classification (behavioral, operational, or system-level) multiplied by severity (6.0–9.0 scale).
2
System regulation — Four factors scored: ownership clarity, decision speed, escalation discipline, and KPI truth.
3
Leader regulation — Three sliders: self-regulation under pressure, decision composure, and trade-off discipline.
4
Results — Gap Score (pressure minus regulation), Gap Index (pressure divided by regulation), Severity band, and Effectiveness %.
